ISIL attacks Iraq base, four Turkish soldiers wounded
In a phone call, Obama urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “to take additional steps to de-escalate tensions with Iraq”, the White House said, including removing more troops.

Iraq asked the Security Council to condemn the “Turkish occupation” and demand that the troops leave immediately, but council diplomats said after the meeting that no decisions had been made.
Turkey says the troops are part of a mission to train Iraqi forces to fight Islamic State militants, but Baghdad denies having invited them and says its sovereignty has been violated. “Iraq has spared no effort to exhaust all diplomatic channels and bilateral negotiations with Turkey, in order to withdraw its forces that are unauthorised in Iraq”, he said.
Turkey is widely perceived in Iraq’s Shiite majority as complicit with Islamic State, and Shiite militias have advocated using force against Turkish troops should the diplomatic track fail.
Islamic State militants attacked a training camp in Bashiqa in Northern Iraq Wednesday, killing three Iraqi Sunni fighters and wounding 10 others, officials said.
The assault, which took place on the eve of a visit here by Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Thursday, was beaten back by USA and allied airstrikes and fierce fighting by peshmerga fighters, as the Kurdish forces are known.
Citing threats from IS, Turkey recently sent an unspecified number of reinforcements to the camp, sparking an uproar in Baghdad. Biden welcomed that initial withdrawal, but insisted it must continue.
He met with Kurdish president Masud Barzani and commanders of the coalition fighting Islamic State, and later met with USA special operations forces and had dinner with his troops.
By finding local anti-ISIL fighters in what he described as “some very unsafe places”, he said he anticipates finding more opportunities with indigenous forces.
After 16 months of USA and allied air strikes in Iraq, the Islamic State has been ousted from several smaller cities, but remains in control of northern Mosul, the country’s second largest city, as well as much of Anbar, the vast desert province in western Iraq.

“Keep in mind they are there, they are on the ground, and they’re protecting us while many Americans enjoy their holiday”, he said. USA officials believe peshmerga fighters killed hundreds more of the extremists, though precise figures were not available.
