‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ shreds records with $238M debut
“With incredible reviews and an excited hardcore fan base that will want to go back over and over again, “Force Awakens” will have long-term playability well into 2016 where it should earn the lion’s share of its potentially record breaking worldwide revenue”, Dergarabedian said.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” collected a galactic $250 million of global ticket sales through Friday and headed toward a historic opening weekend in the United States and Canada as fans around the world reveled in the return of the beloved space saga.
These numbers do justice for the Walt Disney Company’s $4 billion purchase of LucasFilm. It has already shattered pre-sales records, selling more than $100 million of advance tickets.

“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time. White House Press secretary Josh Earnest is joined by Star Wars Storm Troopers and R2D2 in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House, Friday, Dec. 18, 2015. It’s a type of release never before seen in December, where the previous top opening was 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” with $84.6 million.
Two other films that made their debut this weekend appealed to those seeking an alternative to “The Force Awakens”. Star Wars has smashed that to bits, with Variety now reporting a take of $247 million (revised from $238 million) in just one weekend.
The return of stars such as Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher from the original 1977 “Star Wars” film along with younger actors in prominent roles has been cited by critics as a reason for the new film’s appeal across a range of moviegoers. The film placed second with $14.4 million in ticket sales, according to Rentrak.
21st Century Fox’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” provided an option for younger theatre-goers who may not able to attend the PG-13 rated “The Force Awakens”.
