For his part, Kosove says he’s “never seen the DVD”, and Alcon Entertainment plans to “conduct [its] own investigation to figure out what happened”. The FBI is now involved in the case and Kosove said, “We’re going to do more than cooperate with the FBI”.
According to Kosove, he was sent a copy of the screener so he could consider it for film awards.
Kosove said in a statement to EW that the screener, which was signed for by someone in his office, never made its way to him. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are visiting Alcon’s Century City headquarters Tuesday to determine the chain of custody of the DVD and who is responsible for its uploading. Many assumed the source copy of the film would turn out to be a screener copy sent out for awards consideration. Later, a hacker or hackers identifying themselves as Hive-CM8 uploaded the Hateful Eight file after attempting to remove watermark technology from the DVD, which was manufactured by Deluxe. Hateful Eight – a highly-anticipated $70 million Western starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell, which opens in limited release Friday and goes wide December 31 – falls into that category. One piracy group named “Hive-CM8” is taking credit for the leaks, claiming the aforementioned titles are only two of a total of 40 they will leak, according to TorrentFreak, a news site covering online piracy and filesharing.
The source of the Hateful Eight leak, it turns out, came from a bigwig in the industry itself. But the experience of seeing a film on 70mm is something no screener copy can replicate. Other potential Oscar contenders were leaked as well, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant.

By tracking a digital watermark applied to Kosove’s copy of the film, “The Hateful Eight”‘s production company – The Weinstein Co. – was able to trace the illegally distributed file back to Kosove.
