Backlash Begins Over University of Missouri Protest Response

The legislation is a response to the University of Missouri football team refusing to play during recent student civil disobedience at their Columbia campus, and a very bad response at that. Owing to the revenue that big-time college football brings to a university, and the endorsement of head coach Gary Pinkel, the student-led boycott was incredibly effective, drawing national attention to what had been barely reported. In addition, schools would be forced to fine any coaching staff found to be encouraging or enabling student protests.

In a game against the Buffalo Bills, video appeared to show Beckham throwing a punch at a Bills player after getting blocked. Irvin confirmed that Panthers players were directing slurs toward Beckham and said it’s not the first time.

This bill is a direct hit to Missouri University student athletes who recently ceased football activities for three days in solidarity with students calling for a change in administration. The least successful of those protests saw a professor who had joined the student protestors refuse to let a student photographer take pictures of the event.

What do you think that happens with my wife? “So you think that I want to talk with the media now”. This has not been a good season for Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United .

But now, instead of celebrating students’ bravery and collective action, the right-wing lawmakers in Missouri want them to “pay” for their defiance and make sure they never take a stand again.

A police spokesperson said the incident occurred in the afternoon near the Old City’s Jaffa Gate, a popular tourist spot. Most have taken place around the Damascus Gate, the main entrance to the Old City’s Muslim quarter.

“The bill’s sponsors, Republicans Rick Brattin and Kurt Bahr, demonstrate a mentality toward racism that unfortunately is shared by too many Missourians”, said Ellington. “I don’t think that is an appropriate response on their part”.

Funding for the University of Missouri is “going to take a haircut”, Senate leader Richard said. The Brattin bill would require universities to revoke scholarships if an otherwise healthy athlete refused to play or urged a player boycott. After President Tim Wolfe resigned, the team played its remaining games. But, Silver argues, the proposal acknowledges that athletes operate under a different set of rules and that it violates the state’s own constitution: “Revoking a scholarship if an athlete elects to strike as a form of protest certainly seems like a strong way of the government impairing speech”. Butler has ended his hunger strike as a result of the resignation.
