The two nations also share close nuclear ties.
“India is one of the oldest civilisations in the world, which believes that the world is one family; and, that humanity is an integral part of Nature, not superior or distinct from it”, he told Russian news agency Itar-Taas before leaving for Moscow on a two-day official visit. He also spoke in glowing terms of Mr. Putin and said their political journeys had taken identical paths.
The Prime Minister is also expected to visit Kabul on his way back, but this is yet to be confirmed by the MEA.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had expressed hope that the visit would deepen bilateral ties between the two nations.
Without giving specific details, Jaishankar said that Modi and Putin will deliberate on enhancing cooperation in defence and nuclear energy spheres.
Calling Russia an “old and trusted partner of India”, Jaishankar said the two countries’ approach to a lot of global and regional issues were very similar. Modi will reiterate India’s commitment to building 12 nuclear power plants with Russian technical assistance. We have committed to increase this to $30 billion by 2025.
