The mall issued warnings that “this demonstration is not authorized” and that “those who fail to leave the property immediately will be subject to arrest” before police began escorting people out of the building. Black Lives Matter protesters demonstrated at the Minnesota mall previous year, causing some 80-odd stores to shut their doors temporarily.
He said multiple protesters were arrested.
Black Lives Matter protesters caused a temporary shutdown at the Mall of America on the Saturday before Christmas in 2014, according to local CBS affiliate WCCO-TV.
The mall had sought a restraining order after the group said last week it planned a return protest at the mall, where about 1,500 people protested last December over the deaths of black men in police-involved incidents in New Yorkand Missouri.
Mall representatives had warned protesters in advance that they could be removed, arrested and banned. “The Mall of America has now taken the further outrageous and totalitarian step of attempting to control the speech of individuals”, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis said in a statement on its Facebook page. The judge ended up barring the organizers from entering the mall, and the demonstration went on as planned.
The governor questioned the need for such a demonstration, noting federal and state investigations are ongoing into the death of Jamar Clark, who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police responding to an assault complaint.
The activist group Black Lives Matter was planning demonstrations in six U.S cities on Wednesday, which it was calling “Black Xmas” and a national day of action.
A protest that started at the Mall of America has moved to Minneapolis-St.
Hundreds of activists showed up at the Mall of America on Wednesday afternoon, despite the presence of additional security and clearly posted messages that the protest was illegal.
Last month, four men were charged with shooting into a crowd of protesters outside a police precinct in Minneapolis. Mall security guards have also cordoned off parts of a central mall rotunda. He said he sympathizes with protesters’ concerns, but he stressed that the mall is private property.
Bloomington Police Deputy Chief Denis Otterness confirmed officers would be at the mall, but declined to discuss their plans for handling the protest. “Just barring three of us does not mean that you’ve stopped our work”, she said, saying the Wednesday protests would proceed. Three organizers were banned from attending, but the judge said she doesn’t have the power to prevent others from showing up.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton told reporters Wednesday that he plans separate meetings with Black Lives Matter and NAACP officials next week as he prepares proposals to help erase economic disparities between white and black Minnesotans.
