Carter said Washington is willing to do more to support Iraqi security forces as they battle Islamic State and eventually set their sights on Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city that has been under the jihadists’ control since June 2014.
The extremist group mounted the surprise attack with several hundred fighters on three separate locations along the border area dividing Kurdish and Islamic State territories, defense officials said.
IS attacked the camp on Wednesday, killing 3 Iraqi Sunni fighters.

Iraqi troops, backed by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, pushed into Ramadi earlier this week, have surrounded the city and have been preparing to try to take the city back.

USA officials have in the past expressed frustration at how long it has taken Iraqi security forces to take back the city, but MacFarland said that the Iraqis had made significant progress in dislodging Islamic State.
The jets flew training missions with Turkey’s air force and Davis noted that Turkey and the United States also reached an agreement during the deployment outlining procedures for carrying out combat air patrols in the future.
The U.S. still has 12 A-10 close-air support aircraft based at Incirlik, as well as drone aircraft. “It’s kind of hard to inflict support on somebody”. It was the latest stop on the secretary’s trip across the Middle East talking to top USA generals and allied leaders about ways to increase military pressure on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Carter is likely to talk to commanders and Iraqis about the new USA plan to deploy a new special commando force to Iraq.
