Defense Big in Packers Victory over Raiders
The Green Bay Packers may not always look like it, but they’re a playoff team after knocking off the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders needed just four plays to go 79 yards after a crucial Packers fumble, scoring a TD late in the first half to get within 14-13 at intermission on Sunday at the O.co Coliseum.
The Packers received the opening kickoff, but went three and out on their opening drive. Their play has been deteriorating as the season has gone along, especially from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The butt of many jokes over the years, the Raiders haven’t fielded a competent team in some time, but with Carr leading a young core that also includes Amari Cooper and defensive stalwart Khalil Mack, they are a unsafe opponent every week.
Yet, something still feels off. Their offense, though better with coach Mike McCarthy back calling plays for the second straight week, still lacks the rhythm and playmaking that made it one of the most-feared units in the league the past several seasons.
Davante Adams remained a mostly silent partner in the offense (five catches for only a 6.4-yard average), and among his misplays was a jump ball that went through his hands that would have been a 14-yard touchdown pass and cost the Packers four points in the third quarter.
Green Bay gets on the board first with a 5-yard touchdown run from John Kuhn. The Packers close out the season at 14-2 Arizona which wrapped up the NFC West Sunday night by routing the Eagles in Philly Sunday night 40-17. Carr floated a pass well over his slot receiver and the ball fell into Randall’s waiting arms. Despite winning their third consecutive game, their angst is spilling out.
NOTES: Raiders starting DE Mario Edwards Jr. left the game with a neck injury early in the first quarter and not return…. A Quinten Rollins pass breakup in the end zone on third and goal stopped the threat, however, and Oakland settled for a Sebastian Jankowski field goal.
Carr and Murray found some rhythm on the next series, however. The defense locked down again, thankfully holding Oakland to another field goal to make the score 14-6. The Packers defense forced a punt of their own, but took over on their own 2 after the kick.
In 2014, two of his wide receivers-Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson-were Pro Bowlers. A Shelby Harris tackle for no gain on third and two at the Oakland 42 had the Packers with a decision to make. Unfortunately, James Starks coughed up the football two plays later, and the turnover was confirmed upon review.
Oakland quarterback Derek Carr completed 23 of 47 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. “Just looking at our game today, we did a great job stopping the run”. That set up Green Bay’s offense at midfield after a nice return by Micah Hyde.
Still, the game never really escaped the Packers’ grasp. “He made a good play”. Even Randall, abused by Cooper for stretches during the game, still managed a pick-six.
– The Packers finished with 293 yards.
James Starks broke a big run on the ensuing series, going for 25.
The second potential touchdown was nullified by an offensive pass interference call after Jones pushed off on Raiders’ rookie cornerback Dexter McDonald.
The Packers extended their lead to 27-20 when Crosby connected from 21 yards with 10:01 left to play, capping a 92-yard, 19-play drive.
Winning 10, 11 or 12 in the regular season is an accomplishment worthy of congratulations, but you can do that while also pointing out that the Packers need to find a better groove offensively if they’re going to add to the win total once the postseason gets underway.

The Packers don’t want to get into a habit of relying on Crosby, who had a field-goal attempt blocked in the final minute.
