U.S. agrees to resume scheduled commercial flights to Cuba
This arrangement will continue to allow charter operations and establish scheduled air service, which will, according to a State Department statement, “facilitate an increase in authorized travel, enhance traveler choices, and promote people-to-people links between the two countries”.

Senators, congressional representatives, lobbyists, diplomats, current and former U.S. officials, business executives, advocates and activists-gathered Wednesday night for a “one year celebration of U.S.-Cuba ties”.
But those travelling have to do so using difficult-to-book charter flights or via third countries, and are forced to navigate an intricate web of laws in order for their travel to be legal.
“Everybody should be happy because, through baseball, we’re uniting countries, ” Tony Castro, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, said Thursday.
CNN reported, however, that despite the agreement on restoring commercial flights, there has been no word on when the said flights will actually resume, as the Federal Aviation Administration still has to ensure that safety regulations are in place. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla travelled to Washington in July to re-open Cuba’s US Embassy, and Secretary of State John Kerry flew to Cuba a month later to re-open the US Embassy there for the first time since 1961.
Other carriers, including American Airlines and United Airlines, have expressed interest in starting commercial flights as soon as they get permission.
Last year, President Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced they would re-establish diplomatic ties.
Mr. Obama says both countries have taken important steps in that year to normalize relations.
The DOT eventually transferred the rights for that route from Delta to American after American argued Delta was underutilizing its rights, flying a Seattle-Haneda route infrequently but just enough to keep the route from being classified as “dormant”.
Last week, the USA and Cuba met for the first time to discuss resolving the long-standing problem of claims compensation for property and businesses seized in the wake of the 1959 Cuban revolution. Major League Baseball stars including Cuban-born defectors Yasiel Puig and Jose Abreu were warmly welcomed by the Cuban government this week on a goodwill trip meant to pave the way for spring training games in Cuba in 2016.
