Wisconsin Basketball Coach Bo Ryan Retires, Effective Immediately
Associate head coach Greg Gard will take over the program on an interim basis, starting with the team’s game against UW-Green Bay on December 23.

So when the soon-to-be 68-year-old announced his retirement after a ho-hum 64-49 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Tuesday night, it was both shocking and a pretty big deal.
His last two seasons coaching the team have been especially noteworthy: The Badgers made back-to-back Final Four appearances, and played for the national championship this past spring.
It will take some time for Wisconsin to adjust as Ryan transitions into retirement, but the Badgers will look to carry on his legacy and maintain a winning culture in the years to come. “I discussed this with Barry, and I appreciate him giving me the space to make this decision”. Ryan won it in his first season and has never finished lower than fourth in what has been a very tough conference in recent years.
In either case, Wisconsin will feel the potentially crippling impact of Ryan’s absence immediately as the season marches on without it’s legendary coach.
Ryan drew national criticism in 2012 when he tried to restrict forward Jarrod Uthoff from transferring from Wisconsin to another Big Ten school.
King said he was surprised by Coach Ryan’s announcement, thinking he would wait until the end of the season to retire. Alvarez was on hand to compliment Ryan’s legacy. “Take what you learn from coach Ryan”.
Over the course of his Badgers coaching career, Ryan reached the National Championship game once and the Final Four twice. This announcement was amended in August when Ryan essentially said “maybe not”. “He’s a legend. He’s a hall of famer”, Alvarez said. But he said Greg Gard has played an instrumental role in his recruitment and is the one coach he has communicated with the most during the recruiting process.
Prior to his hire as head coach at Wisconsin in 2001, Ryan spent 15 record-setting seasons at UW-Platteville and a pair of successful seasons at UW-Milwaukee.
Ryan said the demands on Gard’s time to fly around the country meeting with doctors and helping Gard’s dad put his retirement on the back burner.

Ryan said Gard’s best attributes in selling himself for the job are his recruiting knowledge to the Wisconsin system and familiarity with the Big Ten, handling the majority of scouting. You probably couldn’t name more than a few Badgers that went on to have great pro careers.
