Customer traffic was also down Wednesday, they said. “Adding the presence of the protesters slowed things down even further”.

As protesters began assembling at the rotunda the mall announced that the planned protest was unlawful and asked demonstrators to leave the grounds. People at the mall ushered participants toward the trains and handed out prepaid fare tickets, according to a bystander at the mall.
Confused travelers looked on as the group marched through the terminal chanting slogans such as “No justice, no peace!” Black Lives Matter activist MiskiNoor told the Chicago Tribune, “The mall was a decoy”.
“I think it was really effective”.
The protest set for Wednesday afternoon at the nation’s largest mall is aimed at drawing attention to the police shooting last month of a black Minneapolis man, Jamar Clark. Before the protests, she said the retail mecca was the ideal venue for the demonstration to pressure authorities involved in the investigation of Clark’s death to release video footage.
Gov. Mark Dayton says the moving protest that has led to disruptions at the Mall of America and Minnesota’s main airport has created a “very, very unsafe situation”.
The governor questioned the need for such a demonstration, noting federal and state investigations are ongoing into the death of Jamar Clark, who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police responding to an assault complaint.
That didn’t deter 67-year-old Minneapolis resident Art Seratoff. Paul International Airport where they briefly shut down roadways to both terminals, leading to eight arrests, an airport spokesman said. “If I think about an unemployment rate in the African-American community three times the white unemployment rate, that’s disruptive”.
Police arrest protesters after thousands of Black Lives Matter activists disrupt holiday shoppers on December 20, 2014 at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. A judge on Tuesday barred three organizers from attending the demonstration, but said she didn’t have the power to block unidentified protesters from showing up.
The Mall of America said in a statement that 80 stores on the mall’s east side were closed for about an hour, but the rest of the building remained open.
There were arrests at the airport, but it was not immediately known how many.
The mall does not allow protests, and the judge’s order did not give the protesters permission to protest at the mall, so more arrests could happen Wednesday.
“Today, on one of the busiest days of the holiday season, black communities across the United States are taking courageous actions to impede the flow of goods and commerce with peaceful protests to call for an immediate overhaul of the justice system both locally and nationally that will demand accountability for police, removal of grand juries in cases involving police shootings, an immediate halt to militarized police units and weapons, and extensive review of racialized police practices in black neighborhoods”, the group said.
“Mall of America has a longstanding policy banning political demonstrations and protests on our private property”, the mall said.
“They can’t get in the way of the operation of the airport”, he said of protesters. Hogan said some flights may be delayed for passengers stuck in security lines.
Protesters boarded trains to the Minneapolis airport and blocked traffic by linking hands.
