CEO: Hospital will cooperate with investigation
Dawson died early Monday morning while she was being removed in handcuffs by the Blountstown Police Department from the Calhoun Liberty Hospital after she refused to leave. Dawson, however, did not want to leave and asked for additional care. Doctors discharged her after they determined that her vital signs were normal, but Dawson said that she still felt she needed additional medical care.

Police say a Florida woman who collapsed after police arrested her for refusing to leave a Florida hospital when doctors discharged her died from a blood clot in her lung.
“She was causing a disturbance in the hospital with her language and the volume of her voice”, Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory told the paper.
“The most reasonable thing to do is to let her sit there and be able to settle down until she felt well”, Tallahassee lawyer Daryl Parks said.
“Even the early facts should cause grave concern for her family”, Darryl Parks, of the law firm Parks and Crump, told the paper, “but also grave concern for the public”.
Dawson’s family says she used an oxygen tank 24-7. Hospital staff checked her breathing and pulse, then returned her into the hospital, where a physician readmitted her.
And the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation from Blountstown police.
Courtesy of the Dawson family. According to the Global Grind, Dawson’s aunt was with her at the time of the incident, and Angela Donar said the staff handled her niece with unnecessary roughness.
“Our staff was very aggressive with her treatment”, Ruth Attaway, Calhoun Liberty Hospital’s administrator and CEO, told the Tallahassee Democrat.
She was there seeking treatment for breathing difficulties.
Doctors tried to readmit Dawson when she collapsed. So she never should have left the hospital anyway.
She was a frequent visitor at Calhoun Liberty, a 25-bed hospital, Attaway said. Upon arrival at the patrol vehicle, our officer went to open the back door at which time Ms. Dawson collapsed and our officer attempted to control her fall to the ground. Neither the autopsy report, nor the police report, nor the dashcam video of the incident has been released. “She is telling them that she is feeling a certain way and they decided that they need to get rid of her and use law enforcement to do just that”.

The Tallahassee NAACP is investigating. Landry told the Associated Press he and others “strongly believe the death was due to negligence by the police department and hospital”.
