A close adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said Damascus is ready to join the UN-sponsored peace talks with its position bolstered by both Russian backing and the West’s retreat from a hardline anti-Assad approach.
“As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China will continue to promote peace and dialogue in Syria and offer humanitarian aid to the country to the best of its abilities”, Wang said during a press conference along with al-Moallem. Resolution 2254 calls for talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups to begin in early January, with a nationwide ceasefire to follow shortly thereafter.
Wang over the weekend invited Syrian government and opposition figures to come to China as Beijing looks to ways to help with the peace process.
Wang declined to answer directly when asked if China thought Assad should remain in power or step down.
“The resolution embodies the broad consensus of the global community, and demonstrates the important role of the Security Council, ” Wang Yi said in remarks after the resolution was passed last Friday.
He emphasised the harm of the ongoing fighting in Syria and expressed China’s long-held point of view that a political solution is the only option.

Government and opposition to visit china with the aim of pushing forwards the political settlement process for the crisis in Syria. “We believe Syria’s future, its national system, including its leadership, should be decided and set by the people of Syria”, he said. “However, in general, we can certainly view a more proactive diplomatic conduct by Chinese leaders outside the Pacific region and across the Greater Middle East”, Scimia told the Daily News Egypt. China emerged as a broker in the Afghan conflict and even hosted a delegation of Taliban negotiators.
