Afghan officials: Southern district remains in state control
Some 12,000 foreign soldiers are deployed in the country as part of the Nato-led Resolute Support global coalition, which is meant to underpin Afghan security forces.

General Abdul Wodud, a senior army commander, said a joint Afghan and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation operation backed by air support had driven the Taliban back from central areas, killing 60 Taliban fighters and wounding 40.
Security has worsened across the country as the Taliban test the mettle of Afghan security forces following the end of the global combat mission in 2014.
However, the hub-and-spoke operation omitted the key province of Helmand, which saw some of the bloodiest battles against the Taliban.
Although the Taliban already hold three districts in Helmand, Sangin’s status resonates because of the hundreds of British and USA soldiers and marines killed and wounded while fighting in the district. Political and military analysts say the fall of Helmand to the Taliban would enable the insurgent group to destabilize southern Kandahar province and western Farah province.
The turmoil in Helmand, the deadliest province for British and United States forces in Afghanistan over the past decade, underscores a rapidly unravelling security situation in Afghanistan. They expect tough fighting in 2016 as what the Pentagon last week called an “invigorated Taliban” steps up its fight.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) said a small number of British personnel have been deployed in Camp Shorabak in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan “in an advisory role”, Xinhua reported.
Adrianna Vorderbruggen was the first openly gay female active duty service member in the USA military and the first openly gay Air Force officer to die in combat.
In an online statement, the militants said the district center had been completely overrun and that they had captured large quantities of weapons and other military equipment. They rarely hold territory for more than a few hours or days, but the impact on the morale of Afghan forces, and people, is substantial. However, district governor Asif Nang rejected the claim as “baseless”.
He said the district governor’s headquarters, very often the final outpost standing when districts are considered to have been captured, had simply been relocated.
Fighting in Afghanistan has intensified since the announcement in late July that the founder and leader of the Taliban, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had been dead for more than two years.
It wasn’t the first time an official used social media to send a message to the president – former intelligence agency chief Rahmatullah Nabil used his Facebook page earlier this month to resign.

Rahmatullah Nabil’s resignation raised uncomfortable questions about a brewing leadership crisis in Afghanistan as the insurgency gains new momentum.
