(Neb)-Ellsworth Airman And Nebraska Native Among The Dead In Afghan Bombing
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – The Afghan military has rushed reinforcements to a southern district threatened for days with takeover by the Taliban, the country’s defense minister said Wednesday as he appealed for stepped-up North Atlantic Treaty Organisation assistance and military support. “We honor them by pressing on with the mission. Above all that needs to be a political strategy”, he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

Air Force Major Adrianna Vorderbruggen, who was commanding the security patrol targeted in Monday’s attack, was the first openly gay US servicewoman killed in action, the Daily Beast news website reported, citing a Department of Defense official.
Taub worked for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, his mother said.
“The tragic loss of six airmen casts a dark shadow over our Air Force this holiday season”, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said.
Vorderbruggen “lived for her family and for her country”, the statement said.
Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar also said that military planes had dropped food supplies for government positions in Sangin.
Astorino said the county “is on bended knee in sadness over the death of one of our own and the grief that it brings the Lemm family”.
The Taliban already held three Helmand districts as well as large parts of the rest of the province outside the main centers and control key strategic roads, making it hard to reinforce and resupply security force units cut off by their advance.
The Taliban statement listed barriers to peace negotiations, including United Nations sanctions on individualTaliban figures which were extended this week, and the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan, with specific mention of the British troops that arrived in Helmand on Wednesday to provide support for Afghan forces battling in Sangin.
The fall of Sangin would be particularly sensitive in the United Kingdom as more than 100 British soldiers died there amid some of the fiercest fighting of the 13-year combat mission.
An Afghan army soldier, Yaseen Zamarai, contacted by Associated Press by telephone inside the besieged base in Sangin said the Taliban were outside the building where they were holding out.
The attack was the deadliest on Americans in Afghanistan since August. When Afghanistans President Ashraf Ghani took office, he ushered in a period of hope for the countrys traumatized and war-weary people that decades of violence would soon end.
