Barbara Dawson died after removal from Liberty Calhoun Hospital

Dawson collapsed while being escorted in handcuffs from the hospital, where she sought treatment for breathing difficulties, Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory said. After she was declared healthy and discharged, Dawson insisted that she was still unwell, demanded further treatment, and refused to leave the hospital.

Several arrests as protest blocks Minneapolis airport access
The protest planned to take place at Mall of America on Wednesday comes after a tense year in Minneapolis. While police and mall security dispersed that gathering, protesters also went to the Minneapolis-St.

The hospital says staff checked her vitals multiple times and found her to be stable, but a doctor readmitted her anyway, at which time she still had a pulse. Attorney Daryl Parks says it is still very early on, but future action on their part could include a suit towards the hospital, the police department or both on behalf of the family: “Something happened in course of them taking her to the auto that alerted them that they needed to go back inside”.

She was brought back inside where emergency medical staff attempted to save her, hospital officials said. Dawson’s family stated in the report that she refused to leave because she was still in pain.

Dale R. Landry, the regional vice president for the Florida State chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), said “we strongly believe the death was due to negligence by the police department and hospital”. According to the Global Grind, Dawson’s aunt was with her at the time of the incident, and Angela Donar said the staff handled her niece with unnecessary roughness. Mallory said an officer had arrested Dawson for disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Ruth Attaway, administrator and CEO of the hospital, told The Tallahassee Democrat that staff did everything they could to save Dawson.

Mallory says he expects autopsy results to be released Wednesday. She worked at a county facility with people with disabilities until she was injured on the job, a contributing factor to her declining health, family members told the Tallahassee Democrat.

As the officer opened the door to his patrol auto to place her inside, Dawson collapsed. There are audio recordings of the arrest, though, and the police have advised that the recordings and a full police report will be released before Christmas. Ms. Dawson had a pulse and appeared to be breathing. It is not clear what she died from or how her condition deteriorated so quickly. The local NAACP chapter held an emergency meeting on the matter Tuesday afternoon. “Because here we have an innocent person taken into custody and now they’ve lost their life when all they did was come and ask for medical help”.
