Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra XUV500 & premium SUVs likely to be banned in Delhi
Delhi-based auto dealers had moved the plea seeking modification of the tribunal’s order, which said that diesel-run vehicles will not be registered in Delhi in the wake of alarming pollution levels in the city.

The court barred diesel trucks older than 10 years from entering the gridlocked capital, and banned the burning of rubbish because the toxic atmosphere reduced visibility and made breathing hard. As much as 80% of demand for luxury cars is for diesel-driven versions.
The court also clarified that no non-Delhi destined trucks can enter the city from National highways 1 and 8 and specified that no truck registered prior to 2005 can ply on the roads of Delhi.
Currently, Mahindra offers a 2.0-litre and above diesel engine in four models – The Scorpio, Bolero, Xylo, and the XUV5OO, which will be banned from being sold in Delhi.
It now fixes matters for hearing on January 5 when it may consider suggestions of Delhi government including the “odd- even” traffic policy.
The intolerable limit of pollution is earning a “bad name” to Delhi as “the most polluted city in the world”, it had said.
Delhi’s air routinely worsens in the winter months, as millions of poor people light fires for warmth and cloud cover traps pollutants.
The Delhi region, for instance, accounts for nearly a quarter of Mercedes-Benz’s sales in the country.
The court said, “A ban on registration of such vehicles will not, therefore, affect the common man or the average citizen in the city of Delhi”.
Supreme Court on Wednesday banned registration of diesel vehicles with engine capacity of 2000 cc and above effective from Jan 1 to March 31, 2016, in the National Capital Region (NCR) which includes Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. The Supreme Court said the NCT Government shall install its own CCTV cameras at nine entry points and also organise surprise visits to oversee the collection of ECC and other necessary arrangements.
Adding to it, the court also advised switching taxis including Ola and Uber to use cleaner CNG.

The Supreme Court’s wide-ranging directions come shortly after it voiced its concern in strong words about rising pollution, saying that rich people can’t go around in SUV’s polluting the environment, a report in The Huffington Post said.
