Mark Hughes will be desperate to see Stoke rally to beat United for just the second time in Premier League history here and the home crowd will no doubt make it a tough afternoon for the visitors.
It was reported earlier this week that Jose Mourinho could be lined up as the next United boss and the Portuguese manager would take the position if it was offered to him.
Hughes, who won the league twice as a Manchester United player, said he was aware that the Old Trafford team was in a transitory phase and that a club of their stature have the players and coaching staff to turn things around.
Striker Peter Crouch (hamstring) is back in training but not yet match fit while defenders Geoff Cameron and Marc Muniesa are also still sidelined with hamstring problems.
Jesse Lingard (hamstring), Marcos Rojo (shoulder), Antonio Valencia (foot) and Luke Shaw (leg) are also still sidelined.
“He has been in the game a long, long time and he knows better than most if the results and perception is you are not doing particularly well, you come under pressure”.
Rooney has scored only two goals in 1140 minutes of Premier League action this season and his minutes per goal ratio (one every 570) is more than double that of any of his previous 13 Premier League seasons as a player. Indeed, Oldham have conceded 155 goals on Boxing Day, more than any other team.
“When the squads are released I think he’s stopped looking, to be perfectly honest, because however well he plays he doesn’t expect to be in, unfortunately”.
“If you’ve never done it, then you’ve not experienced that, and you don’t really understand what it takes to win the top games”.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has blasted reporters in his latest press conference. I don’t like going against Stoke at home, they tend to keep a lot of clean sheets, and I’m going with a win for the Potters again.
