Russia hosts pro-Kurdish Turkish politician who condemns Ankara
The visit by Demirtas, the leader of Turkey’s People’s Democratic Party (HDP), is likely to worsen already poor ties between Moscow and Ankara since his party is a staunch political foe of the AK Party Erdogan founded. Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov and his French counterpart Pierre de Villiers confirmed their intention at their meeting in Moscow to keep an undivided and secular Syria, the press office of Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

ANKARA-Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has accused the leader of the Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtas of “treason” by saying in Moscow that he thought Turkey’s shooting down of the Russian warplane last month was “not right”.
It goes about the remarks from an official representative of the Turkish government Numan Kurtulmus, to whom Turkish media referred in publishing accurate data about the time, quantity and places of departure of Russian military aircraft in Syria.
“The people of Turkey have no responsibility in the current crisis”, he said.
Turkey says the plane violated its airspace for 17 seconds and ignored multiple warnings, while Moscow maintains the aircraft didn’t cross into Turkey and was downed over Syria. It would be keenly aware of the sensitivity of Ankara to any contacts between Moscow and Kurdish politicians.
Erdogan himself has been one of the main critics of the HDP and Demirtas, accusing the party of providing support for the Kurdish militants fighting in Turkey’s southeast.

Following the incident, Russian Federation introduced sanctions against Turkey, including: banning agricultural trade with Ankara, returning to the visa regime between the two countries, and halting the majority of bilateral projects. “They aren’t responsible for what happened with Su-24; it’s a decision that was made by the country’s leadership”, Russia’s foreign minister concluded.
