Clinton’s Attempt to Appeal to Latino Voters Backfires
It’s a hardly a surprise, then, that candidates are tripping over themselves to connect with Latino voters.

Hillary Clinton met with criticism and resistance after her campaign compared the Democratic candidate to a Latino grandmother figure.
“Abuela” is Spanish for grandmother, and probably not coincidentally the video was released the same day Clinton’s daughter Chelsea announced she is pregnant with Hillary’s second grandchild. The Latino Twitterati found the blog’s comparison so offensive, they started a hashtag, #NotMyAbuela, & listed ways Hillary shouldn’t be like their abuela.
The post emphasizes “respeto” – respect, but Twitter users took issue with the post.
“She isn’t afraid to talk about the importance of el respeto (especially when it comes to women)” and “She had one word for Donald Trump…”
Hillary! Please, we know you want to be president, and honestly, I would vote for you if it came to it. But, you have to chill.
And, “Everybody loves abuela-even this guy”. The hashtag #NotMyAbuela was a top-trending topic on Twitter in the United States on Tuesday, and it continues to trend on Facebook on Wednesday.

Paola Luisi, a Latina staffer on the Clinton campaign, authored the original post because “Clinton reminds her of her abuela and because of the news Monday that Clinton was going to be a grandmother again”, the campaign told BuzzFeed.
