The opening weekend box office run by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is nothing short of historic.
Force Awakens surpassed the previous opening-day record of $43.5 million set in 2011 by the final Harry Potter movie. As a result, The Force Awakens is the first movie to ever earn more than $100 million in a single day, which also makes it the fastest movie to ever reach triple digits.
“It’s probably going to do in the region of $100 million plus in Australia which the only other film to pass $100 million is Avatar”.
“Jurassic World”, an unexpected sensation in June, also holds the global weekend opening record with $524.9 million, a number “The Force Awakens” could well exceed. The movie’s worldwide rollout, which began Wednesday, has brought in a total of $72.7 million.
Analysts say the space saga could become the biggest selling movie of all time. Judging from the positive fan reviews and the fact that movie has yet to open in many large, lucrative markets like China , the chances are pretty high!
The film has also set a new opening night box office record in the U.S. and Canada.
If nothing else, Disney will surely add another title to its domination in the opening-weekend record books.
“I would argue the two-year marketing campaign for “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” was flawless in its execution”, said Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis.
“The Force Awakens”, directed by J.J. Abrams, stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the key roles as Rey and Finn along with original “Star Wars” stars Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher as General Leia.
A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012.
