Gas Buddy predicted in late November that the national average is expected to dip below $2 per gallon in time for Thanksgiving. The last time prices were this low across the United States was March 25, 2009. Idaho’s current average price is $2.14, within a penny or so of that price since the end of November.
Regional AAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Carey says in the Rochester area, we’re a little higher than that, but still well below where prices were a year ago.
The price of gas tends to drop in the fall and early winter, as motorists use cheaper winter blends and drive less.
December 21- Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have not moved in the past week, averaging $1.79/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.
Plunging oil prices are the main factor driving down the price at the pump.
“A global oversupply of oil has led to the lowest gas prices for the year-end holidays since 2008”, said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group.
The national average for gas prices has dropped below two dollars. Even with the increase, AAA expects prices to remain below $3 a gallon through 2016.
“Drivers across the country are celebrating the historic return of cheaper gas prices”, Marshall Doney, AAA’s president and CEO said in a statement.
The group said the average price of a gallon of gas may not go above $3 per gallon next year due to low crude oil prices and high supplies.
