Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey wins AP player of year
McCaffrey is The Associated Press College Football Player of the Year, becoming the first non-Heisman Trophy victor to earn the honor in six years. In 2009, the AP gave the award to Ndamukong Suh after he was beat out by Mark Ingram for the Heisman, and this year McCaffrey will take home the award after losing out to Derrick Henry.

The AP voters, who voted weekly on the Top 25 poll, selected the Stanford running back with 29 out of 60 votes.
Russo reported Tuesday that McCaffrey is the AP’s college football player of the year, finishing ahead of Henry and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
This is only the second time that the award, which was first given in 1998, has been given to a running back, after McCaffrey’s idol, Reggie Bush of USC, won the award back in 2005.
“This award is a testament to all the efforts and support of my teammates, coaches, staff and the entire Stanford football program”, McCaffrey said in a statement. Henry finished second with 16 votes.
