Conflicting Narratives in Resignation of Review-Journal Editor
The family of billionaire casino mogul Adelson confirmed in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that they are the new owners of Nevada’s largest newspaper, ending a week of speculation and demands by staff and politicians to know the identity of the new boss.

He said that his resignation would probably be considered good news by the new owners and that his decision is in his best interest and that of his family.
On Tuesday, the Review-Journal editor who decided not to run anything on the three judges told the staff he was stepping down after accepting a voluntary buyout. The editor accepted a buyout offer, the new owners said in an e- mailed statement late Tuesday. “We regard ourselves as stewards of this essential community institution, and we promise that the Review-Journal will serve the people of Las Vegas for many years to come”, the statement read. Adelson is chief executive and chairman of publicly-traded Las Vegas Sands Corp.
But in the weeks since he has owned the paper, reporters said, several articles about the paper have been heavily reviewed and edited to remove quotes that could be viewed as unfavorable to the new owners.
The conflicting timeline emerged right as more questions about the Adelsons’ role in the purchase materialized: a new AP report revealed that during the Review-Journal’s investigation into the Nevada judge, a separate newspaper in CT published a story criticizing the same judge for “inconsistent” and “contradictory” rulings.
Mr. Taylor, who was on vacation, did not respond to messages seeking comment on Wednesday.
The Adelsons said they held back revealing themselves as owner because they didn’t want an announcement to distract from last week’s Republican presidential debate held at The Venetian, the casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip that is part of Adelson’s empire.
But few American newspaper owners have as vocal an agenda as Adelson, a Republican kingmaker known for handing over tens of millions to political campaigns. On social media, some of the newspaper’s staff have said they are stunned to see Hengel go.
GateHouse Media LLC, a subsidiary of the previous owner, will keep running the Review-Journal, which has a Sunday circulation of 184,000. Jennifer Robison, a reporter who has been writing about the sale, said that the year over all had been one of transition, and the ownership change was just the latest test. But without Mr. Hengel guiding the way, she said, there was more uncertainty than ever.
