Dearborn Police say an officer shot the man during a chase in the eight thousand block of Whitcomb Avenue, which is near Tireman Avenue and Greenfield Road.
Haddad said Matthews had escaped from officers earlier in the day after allegedly committing a larceny in Dearborn.
Rev. Bullock said there are similarities between what happened in Detroit with Kevin Matthews, 35, and Michael Brown in Ferguson. According to a source, the officer and suspect got into a wrestling match before the suspect broke free and ran again.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the pursuit “ended in the backyard of a residence, where there was an obvious struggle” and then shots were fired.
Reports say the shooting occurred as the two struggled over the officer’s gun, but that detail was not immediately confirmed by police. Craig said that at this time he does not know if the suspect was armed. At one point, he is heard breathing heavily before saying the other man was wounded and “we have a suspect down” in the backyard. “There appears to be a struggle that took place over the officer’s gun”.
Haddad says the shooting is “extremely tragic”, and he offered condolences to the family of the victim.
The officer, who is white, was not identified by police.

The Detroit Police Department also responded to the scene of the incident and said they would be conducting an investigation of their own.
