‘Falcon’ rocket re-lands intact at Cape Canaveral

On Monday, Elon Musk’s SpaceX had the biggest rocket launch and landing in history: After shooting one of its Falcon 9 rockets (shown below) into space, SpaceX then turned part of the rocket, called the first stage, around for an epic rocket landing at its Landing Zone 1.

In an interview with Ars Technica, Eric Stallmer, president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, an advocate of commercial human spaceflight, said the successful landing upon reentry will have broad implications for the space flight industry. This time, Musk opted for a true land landing.

“It makes all the difference in the world – absolutely fundamental”, Musk said in a teleconference after Monday night’s launch and landing.

Mr Musk has said the ability to return its rockets to Earth so they can be reused and reflown would hugely reduce his company’s operational costs in the growing but highly competitive private space launch industry. In the meantime, he’s working to transform the SpaceX Dragon capsules from cargo ships into real spaceships for crews traveling to and from the orbiting station. Its Mars Orbiter Mission cost just $74 million, less than a tenth of NASA’s Mars mission. “That’s what all this is about”.
