The Force takes in record $353m
It goes without saying that the seventh episode in the “Star Wars” saga topped the weekend box office, but the question is was it enough to surpass “Jurassic World” as the biggest opening weekend of all time?

“The Force Awakens”, which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed an estimated 129.5 million internationally since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden. Whilst that figure is slightly behind Jurassic World’s $524m, it’s expected that once the final numbers have been calculated, Star Wars will have nabbed that record too. Worldwide, the film has made $517 million. Disney bought Lucasfilm for US$4 billion in 2012 and spent more than US$200 million to produce The Force Awakens.
The movie is now open in all markets except Greece and India, where it premieres on Thursday, 24 December, and China, which has a 9 January debut.
In New Zealand, the first-day screenings alone, starting at midnight on Thursday, netted more than $1.5 million.
Disney paid $4bn for Lucasfilm and the Star Wars series in all.
“The Force Awakens” ran at 4,134 screens in North America, compared with 4,274 for “Jurassic World” and 4,349 for “The Avengers”. Of that $57 million, almost half came from 3-D screenings, and roughly 10 percent came from IMAX screenings.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has scored the biggest four-day opening weekend of all time in the United Kingdom and Ireland. A December opening like this is unheard of (the previous December record was held by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which debuted to $84.6 million).
The latest Star Wars movie was just released, but it’s not only the original, hard-core fans who showed up to buy a ticket.
