Modi said recent economic indicators in both India and Japan were extremely encouraging, especially in the light of the global economic slowdown.

The two countries’ growing closeness is also seen to be driven by common concerns over the rise of China, particularly with Beijing flexing its muscles in territorial disputes in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

“They called for an immediate commencement and early conclusion of negotiations on a non-discriminatory, multilateral and internationally and effectively verifiable Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT) on the basis of Shannon Mandate”, said the joint statement.
