Amnesty accuses Russian Federation of killing Syrian civilians in airstrikes
The chair of Russia’s Defence and Security Committee, Viktor Ozerov, denied any civilian deaths and said Moscow had nothing to hide from the worldwide community regarding its role in Syria.

“Russian authorities may have lied to cover up civilian damage”, the report suggests. “Every day we show you how Russian aviation is fighting worldwide terrorism, destroying their infrastructure in Syria”, said Igor Konoshenkov, a Russian defense official.
The general-major concluded that such fake reports are manufactured to distract the global community from the four-year civil war in Syria and to divert public attention from real concerns on the ground. More than 40 civilians are thought to have been killed in the attack, which Ghazal said took place in an area where armed groups were not present.
Russian Federation has been flying near daily raids to bomb targets in Syria at the request of President Bashar al-Assad.
It’s not the first time Russian airstrikes, which began over three months ago, in Syria are being criticised.
Amnesty in the report said it had “researched remotely” over 25 Russian attacks that occurred in Homs, Hama, Idlib, Latakia and Aleppo between the start of the Russian campaign on September 30th and November 29th.
There are indeed some “serious defects” in the credibility of Amnesty’s report, security analyst and former counter-terrorism intelligence officer Charles Shoebridge told RT, suggesting that was rather an emotional call to avoid civilian casualties, than an independent and impartial investigation.
Moscow says its target is the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other “terrorists”, but rebel forces and their backers accuse Russian Federation of focusing on moderate fighters instead.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said December 21 that Russian Federation is conducting the operation in full compliance with worldwide law. “Russia’s Ministry of Defence must be more transparent and disclose targets of their attacks in order to facilitate assessment of whether they are complying with their obligations under worldwide humanitarian law”, said Philip Luther. Each cluster bomb scatters scores of bomblets over an area the size of a football pitch. Some also say that Russian-operated planes tend to fly in twos. We have, by far, not used everything of what we already have.
