McCallum says 10000 Syrian refugees won’t arrive in Canada by year end
The government initially pledged to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February, but will now up that amount to 50,000 by the end of 2016. He said that by the end of the year, 10,000 Syrian refugees will be identified as certified Canadian permanent residents, but the government is still unsure whether the refugees would be able to set their foot on Canadian soil within that time as promised. Several hundred refugees have arrived in Canada since late last month, with some 10,000 expected by the end of the year and a total of 25,000 by the end of February.

Refugees are required to start paying off the loan 30 days after arriving in Canada.
As of December 21, 1,869 refugees had landed in Canada, with three more flights scheduled between Wednesday and New Year’s Eve.
Are they equipped to handle a potential doubling of refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war, many of whom will require physical and psychological care?
“All the way in the airplane, I was blaming my husband, asking him why did we do this, we don’t know where we are going and we have these small children”, says the woman, who asked that NPR not use her name or take photos because she’s scared for relatives still in Syria. “We don’t know what is waiting for us in Canada”. So far there are only 339 government sponsored refugees and 233 who came via a blended program.
“That certainly remains our target, we are working day and night to achieve it. But there are certain factors outside our control”, McCallum told reporters during a briefing on the Syrian refugee effort.
Friesen says Canada is the only country in the world that charges refugees interest on the loans they’re issued when brought to this country – and the issue is causing a stir in the refugee community. While at the COC, he met with prospective Syrian refugees for resettlement and walked through the interview process.
Their neighborhood association has raised more than the minimum of $25,000 that the government requires of sponsors, and furniture and clothing donations have poured in.
In addition, McCallum announced that an additional $15 million would be going to agencies assisting in the refugee resettlement plan.

“It is a great sign of the generosity of all Canadians, according to their means”, McCallum said.
