India, Russia expanding economic relations: PM Modi
MOSCOW (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talks that focused on defense, nuclear and energy ties. He said, “If one country stood by India through good times and bad, then it is Russian Federation. I thank him for the gifts”, the Prime Minister tweeted. “India has now been successful in convincing the world that it is the demand of time that all forces which believe in humanism should join hands to root out terrorism”, he said.

The agreements on cooperation in the field of helicopter engineering, and a Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation in the railway sector. Modi will address a gathering of Friends of India and also meet members of the Indian community in Russian Federation.
The two countries have outlined an “ambitious vision” for nuclear energy and agreed that the new reactors would be built over the next 20 years. “Our cooperation with Russian Federation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy is a cornerstone of our strategic partnership”, he said replying to a question.
“There shall be an interplay with Russian businesspersons to ask them to take a position in India”.
According to an official statement, Modi was given an overview of the actual functioning and real-time monitoring operations of the centre.
Before heading for the Kremlin, Modi laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier here.
“Energy is a sphere where we can do much more”, the Indian premier said in an interview to TASS agency this week.
“Our relations are developing in all areas: this applies to political matters and the coordination of our efforts on the worldwide arena; it also applies to the economy and humanitarian cooperation”.
Putin highlighted the countries’ active interparliamentary and intergovernmental commission work, and emphasized the importance of addressing issues that require special attention in light of a complicated economic climate. While Abhinandan will portray the assimilation of India’s performing arts traditions by Russian artistes, Abhivyakti will be an attempt to articulate and convey an authentic image of Indian traditions, history and culture by Russian artistes. Modi also expressed condolence over the death of Russian citizens in a plane crash in Egypt in October. All 224 people on board the plane were killed.
Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said it was sad that Russians had to remind Modi that he has to respect his anthem.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial dedicated to the Soviet soldiers killed in World War II and is located by the Kremlin wall in the Alexandrovsky Garden.

Dipankar Banerjee, a defence analyst at New Delhi-based think tank Forum for Strategic Initiatives, said India was “vulnerable to Pakistan and China both in terms of missile attacks and air strikes” and that the S-400 defence systems were “very desirable” despite a hefty price tag.
