Multiple collisions, spinouts and avalanche control work have closed the interstate around the pas numerous times in the past few days as winter storms continue to bring snow to the Cascades. “The roadway is expected to remain closed today and conditions will be evaluated this evening to determine when the pass can be reopened”.
Stevens and White passes were open Thursday morning.
In addition to Stevens Pass, several alternate routes to Eastern Washington are available, including Highway 12 over White Pass, Highway 14, and Interstate 84, which goes through Oregon.
At one area of Snoqualmie Pass, 15 feet of snow covered all lanes of the interstate, the transportation department reported. Two avalanched crews, from the DOT and the Snoqualmie ski resort are working to clear avalanches now.
Stevens Pass (U.S. Highway 2) reopened to traffic, after an all-morning closure.
Drivers on Lolo Pass – as well as Lookout and Lost Trail passes – were encountering snow-covered roads with icy conditions, or even roads that had become bare and wet. “Bring chains and be prepared to put them on”.

WSDOT advised travelers Wednesday to wait until Thursday to cross the passes because of heavy snow.
