Woman died of blood clot after removed from hospital
A Florida woman who had sought medical attention at a hospital for breathing difficulties died when doctors kicked her out, going so far as having police handcuff her and forcibly remove her, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.

Hospital staff called police in the early hours of Monday morning because she wouldn’t leave. She was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing, then handcuffed and escorted out of the hospital. The NAACP and the Tallahassee law firm, Parks and Crump, will be representing the family as they consider filing suit against either the hospital, the police department or both.
According to a statement by police, Dawson was readmitted and appeared to be alive when she left police custody, but she later died in the hospital’s emergency department. The officer then uncuffed her and summoned medical attention…Hospital staff checked her pulse, oxygen and vital signs three times and told the officer she was fine.
Family members of Barbara Dawson are considering bringing a lawsuit against those they deem responsible for the untimely death of the Florida woman. So she never should have left the hospital anyway.
Barbara Dawson, 57, of Bristol, Fla., was admitted Sunday evening to Calhoun Liberty Hospital in nearby Blountstown after arriving by ambulance and seeking help for stomach pain. Ruth Attaway, administrator and CEO of the hospital, was quoted by The Tallahassee Democrat as saying that staff did everything they could to save Dawson. Hospital staff banned her from the 25-bed facility and called police when she refused to leave. She was arrested for refusing to leave a hospital. “Instead, she is forcibly removed and put in cuffs”, Parks told the Associated Press.
When she was returned to the hospital, Dawson was still breathing, Mallory said.
Before being placed in the back of the patrol vehicle, Dawson collapsed. The Florida state medical examiner ruled on Wednesday that she died from natural causes due to a blood clot in her lung. The early facts of this case should cause a great concern for everyone’. “They got the doctor to come out there and get a pulse of her and they couldn’t get no pulse”. He says they won’t have final answers until autopsy results come in.

The group is glad that state law enforcement is investigating, Landry told AP, “but we strongly believe the death was due to negligence by the police department and hospital”, he said.
