A witness who works at a store in the mall says she heard about ten shots fired and then people began running.
An off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer working security at the mall responded to the gunfire, which happened during a fight between two groups.
CNN says its affiliate stations in Charlotte report there was a confrontation in which one man pulled out a gun.
“Preliminary evidence gathered on scene indicates that a group of subjects who had a history of feuding encountered each other inside the mall and got into an altercation which led to Mr. Westbrook shooting a firearm”.
Witnesses said the mall was being evacuated and the parking lot cleared out. Buyers who have been crowding the mall for last-minute gifts hid in stores & locked themselves inside, officers stated. One “armed” person was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
