The Eastern Air Defense Sector is a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) headquarters unit located at Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome. “Part of what we do in the military and part of this program is you have to keep up with the times”.
– The nation is tracking Santa today as he travels the globe this Christmas Eve. They’ve been at it for sixty years. In the case an aircraft doesn’t have a code, NORAD scramble jets to see who it is and what they’re doing. The tone of his voice is so sober you feel like you’re hearing about safety on Air Force One.
The tracking of Santa pre-dates the Internet age, and NORAD itself – and was quite accidental.
Finally, to have a 3D cartographic experience, you can track Santa using Google Earth.
His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke – but then, Terri [Van Keuren] says, the little voice started crying. “There was an ad that was placed in a Sears catalog at Christmas-time and it said, ‘Hey, kids!”
Santa, yeah, on Christmas Eve – talk about a hard meeting to get. Except that there was a typo, and the number actually went to CONAD, a military agency charged with spotting nuclear missiles fired from the Soviet Union. Col. Harry Shoup picked up.
Instead of reaching Santa, the phone rang through to the crew commander on duty at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center. And the tradition has kept up ever since!
Log on to the NORAD Santa Tracker website and watch Saint Nick get ready for the big trip, rand the Santa-curious may speak with live operators who will dish on the big guy’s coordinates: 1-877-Hi-NORAD (1-877-446-6723).

Miles of wire, dozens of computers and 157 telephone lines greeted hundreds of volunteers Thursday, the (Colorado Springs) Gazette reported. Even the First Lady takes calls from her family’s vacation home in Hawaii. Google’s also built Santa tracking into its search engine.
