Kind Hearted Lunch Lady Gets Fired for Helping a Hungry Kid
Dalene Bowden, formerly of Idaho’s Irving Middle School, was recently approached by a 12-year-old girl who was hungry but couldn’t provide the $1.70 difference required for a hot lunch.

She said she was working as a server last Tuesday when a 12-year-old girl told her she didn’t have any money and was hungry.
Bowden, who did not return multiple attempts for comment from The Associated Press, said she has worked for the school for three years.
The change was spurred by national backlash which included an online petition which garnered thousands of signatures; a GoFundMe account that has raised almost $20,000; and Facebook comunity page with almost 10,000 followers.
Following the incident, Bowden was placed on unpaid leave and then received a letter days later issuing the termination of her position. Bowden says that they are instructed to throw the real food away if a child over the limit attempts to buy it – a problem that somehow still persists nationwide in 2015. Following the meeting, Howell offered Bowden her job back.
Her supervisor saw what happened, and Bowden offered to pay for the meal herself.
Bowden who is also a breast cancer survivor admitted that she had gotten a previous warning about her generosity when she gave a kid a free cookie.
“So, I handed her the food and said, ‘Here”. KPVI-TV reached out to the school district but didn’t get a response. She has hired an attorney.
“I love the students, and they love me, too”, Bowden wrote. However, she says they have school policies in place to never let a student go hungry even if the student has no money for food.
Bowden received a letter saying she was terminated for “theft”.
Asked if she regrets handing out the free meal, the former lunch lady told: ‘My heart hurts. “You’re negative.’ Something needs to be changed”, the mom said.
The school district labeled it “theft”, despite the meal costing less than $2.
Students are allowed to charge up to $11.00, but workers can still give them some food if they exceed that limit, the Journal reports.

The city said on its Twitter page that Pocatello’s mayor met with the school superintendent on Wednesday and applauded the district’s offer to rehire Bowden.
