Skier Nearly Hit by Drone
The champion Austrian skier was on his second run of the race when the plummeting drone crashed into the mountain next to him, missing him by inches.

In a press conference after his descent reported by the New York Times, Hirscher said of a something he’d sensed immediately behind him: “I didn’t know what it was, but I felt something”.
Course workers slip through the gates shortly after each skier to smooth the snow surface for the next competitor. The drone and the drone pilot have been provided by a third party service to Infront Sports & Media.
Waldner said the FIS decided the drone might have been okay to use, but the pilot shouldn’t have flown the camera straight above the race course. “He had to fly outside of the race track and follow the racer from a 15-meter (49-foot) distance”.
Thankfully, Hirscher had a lucky escape.
In addition to the FIS, their broadcast partner Infront Sports & Media – whose President and chief executive is Sepp Blatter’s nephew, Philippe – also apologised to the Sochi 2014 silver medallist, who had regained the overall World Cup lead with his second place finish.
In the past, drones have been used at the ski races, as the new technology was meant to give viewers an enhanced experience because regular cameras can’t get so close.
The drone was carrying a flag bearing a map of “Greater Albania”, which included Serbia, in a clear provocation between two Balkan nations with fragile ties, particularly since Kosovo, a former province of Serbia populated by mostly ethnic Albanians, declared independence in 2008 – a move not recognized by Belgrade. “This could result in a serious injury”, he said. “But you have to guarantee the safety – and that was just insane”.
But no flying object has guaranteed safety.
However, the Austrian was less than impressed after the race following his close shave with the drone. A Kentucky man chosen to shoot one down over his house, an action for which he was exonerated by a judge. Some ski resorts are adding areas called “drone zones”.
