Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were investigating “an officer-involved shooting” inside the Northlake Mall in Charlotte today.
Westbrook died at the scene, police said, noting that no officers were injured.
Putney said Officer Thomas Ferguson was working off-duty at the mall when he heard the shots and confronted the man who pointed a gun in his direction.
Reports indicate a gunman was killed in the incident in Northlake Mall.
Two other people were being treated, one who had gone into labor and another patient who had an asthma attack, the agency tweeted.
He said a police officer was nearby and returned fire, and that the suspect appeared to have been hit twice by the officer.
An altercation in a store at a mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, led to gunfire and one person getting shot, Shauntelle Hamrick, the manager of the Journeys shoe store, told CNN.
The scene was chaotic, she said: People ran to their cars.
One witness told television station WCNC that he heard multiple shots and then was swept up in a crush of people running away.
Chief Putney says the officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
