The Force Awakens: ‘Star Wars’ blasts opening weekend record with $238 million
Basically the entire world has seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but everyone who saw it is pretty antsy to see it again.

The latest instalment of the highly anticipated space epic raked in $57 million for its opening night Thursday, easily beating the previous record – $43.5 million – held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in 2011.
A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow.
The Walt Disney Co. on Saturday said the film made an estimated $120.5 million from Thursday night previews and opening day Friday.
Despite the huge opening, “Force Awakens” hasn’t made any money quite yet.
The first “Star Wars” film in a decade took in a total of $517 million at box offices around the world, second only to the dinosaur film “Jurassic World”, which had the benefit of an opening weekend that included China, where “Force Awakens” won’t open for weeks.
Meanwhile, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is a distant new entry in the North American chart at number two with $14.4 million (£9.6 million), while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters comedy takes the third spot with $13.4 (£8.9 million). Sequels and spinoffs are already in development for years to come, not to mention an entire corner of Disneyland devoted to the franchise. The film also received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences, scoring a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an A cinemascore from moviegoers.
But so far, “The Force Awakens” is attracting the interest of seemingly everyone.
Giving an end-of-year press conference, President Barack Obama revealed he too was swept up by the mania. Soon to begin was a screening of the film for families who have lost a relative to combat or service-related injuries.
