California governor pardons Robert Downey Jr. in drug case
Robert Downey Jr. has been pardoned by California Gov. Jerry Brown for a 1996 drug conviction that the “Avengers” star served jail time for. Downey was arrested in Los Angeles County and found with cocaine, heroin and a pistol.

In 1999, he was sent to prison for roughly a year after he acknowledged violating his probation.
The pardon does not seal or expunge the criminal record of Downey or the others. According to the New York Times, Brown typically has granted pardons on Christmas Eve.
The governor’s office said in a written statement, “Pardons are not granted unless they are earned”.
Brown issued 105 pardons in 2014, and 127 pardons in 2013.
Downey famously battled substance abuse and was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges from 1996 to 2001. In the past five years, Governor Brown has issued even more pardons, 683 of them. He is one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors now, and has made the Iron Man movie franchise one of the biggest in film history. He also stole the hearts of fans worldwide as the famous literary detective, Sherlock Holmes. Downey was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for his supporting role in “Tropic Thunder”.
The crimes he has been pardoned for include possession of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle with a prior conviction, driving under the influence with priors and driving while using or under the influence of a controlled substance.

A governor’s pardon in California allows a felon to regain certain rights, such as the ability to serve on a jury.
