After hospital staff checked her pulse, oxygen and vital signs three times and told the officer she was fine, a doctor readmitted Dawson to the hospital.
Police say Dawson collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went for treatment for breathing difficulties.
Her death comes at a time of increased scrutiny of the use of force by law enforcement, particularly against minorities, following a string of national protests over the deaths of mostly unarmed black men during interactions with police.
Police say a Florida woman who collapsed after police arrested her for refusing to leave a Florida hospital when doctors discharged her died from a blood clot in her lung.
Relatives told the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper that she felt she needed more medical care. Nurses disagreed, and then “banned” Dawson from the hospital, her family said.
The Tallahassee law firm Parks and Crump is representing Dawson’s family and plans to file a lawsuit against the hospital, the Blountstown Police Department, or both.
Some of those visits, too, had ended in conflict – Donar told the Democrat that staff at Calhoun Liberty had called the police on Dawson before, and once kicked her off the premises when she brought a friend in for treatment.
At a news conference this afternoon, Ruth Attaway, hospital administrator, expressed the facilities deepest symphathies. Our officer asked for help once he realized the patient did indeed appear to be unresponsive and had medical staff respond to Ms. Dawson at approx. “Instead, she is forcibly removed and put in cuffs”. “The early facts of this case should cause a great concern for everyone”. So she never should have left the hospital anyway.
He said Dawson collapsed about 5 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 6:24 a.m.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the death of a Bristol woman outside a local hospital earlier this week.
The NAACP held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to consider the incident.

“If her death was wrongfully determined, then somehow, someway, there needs to be some sort of recompense to the family”, Dale Landry of the Florida NAACP said in a statement.
