Canada aims to double intake of Syrian refugees to 50000, immigration chief
The Canadian government says the country’s resettlement program could double its intake by the end of next year to 50,000 people.

But Mr McCallum said Canada now hopes to settle as many as 50,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016.
He also said the government is on track to hit its target of 25,000 Syrian refugees “well before the end” of February.
McCallum said that he was “very confident” the government’s goal of resettling 25,000 Syrians in Canada before the end of February would be met. He said that initially there was a “good chance” for achieving the goal by the end of the year, but given the present situation, there are only eight days left to bring in 8,000 refugees.
“This reaffirms for me Canada must do its part to urgently resettle some of these Syrian refugees to Canada”.
McCallum said the government will have identified the 10,000 refugees, but not all will be in the air by the end of December.
Mr. McCallum said the government is “moving heaven and earth” to bring in as many refugees as quickly as possible, rejecting the argument that he was “playing politics with people’s lives” by making unrealistic promises to refugees.
“So the maximum would be five flights a day”, he explained. But it pushed its deadline back to February after the deadly November attacks in Paris, saying it would bring in 10,000 by year-end.
As the minister spoke, one flight was on its way to Montreal carrying almost 300 refugees.
As of December 17, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) had registered 633,466 Syrians in Jordan, another 1,070,189 in Lebanon, and 2,291,900 in Turkey.
McCallum also announced Wednesday the government would provide $15 million to agencies in 23 communities to help provide housing and supplies for arriving refugees.
“It is a great sign of the generosity of all Canadians, according to their means”, McCallum said.
During his two-day stop in Jordan, Mr McCallum visited development projects and refugee centres.

“The crisis continues to have an enormous social and economic impact on the host countries, with many local, municipal and national services such as health, education and water under severe strain”.
