Co-workers Nicole Kirkpatrick and Columbus were in the Locker Room Sporting Goods store on the lower level of the mall near Journeys when shots rang out.
“The first thing I did was run to the storage unit, the second thing I did was hide in the storage unit, the third thing, If I had to I would have fought”, she said. It was extremely loud. “You don’t think gunshots”. He said he heard pops that sounded like gunfire. He tells The Associated Press, “Chaos erupted as shoppers dove for cover or tried to get out of the door”.
The mall was evacuated, but there was no continuing threat, said Jeff Keith, deputy director of the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency.
One mother tells FOX 46 her daughter, who works at the mall, heard several shots in Northlake Mall.
Neither the dead suspect nor the officer who shot him were immediately identified.
The man who died was armed, police said.
