PROSECUTORS hauled U.S. vulture capitalist Martin Shkreli before judges on Thursday to face charges that he looted pharmaceutical company Retrophin of $11 million (£7.4m) to pay back disgruntled hedge fund clients.
The current Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ron Tilles, will take his place as interim CEO.
Tilles has worked at numerous private equity and venture capital firms in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries over the last two decades.
Shkreli first made headlines in September after he raised the price of an AIDS drug, Daraprim, from $13.50 a pill to $750, making him the “most hated man in America,” according to the BBC.
Tilles helped found Retrophin in 2011 and followed Shkreli to Turing in 2014.
Mr Shkreli, was later released on a £3.3 million bond after pleading not guilty to seven counts of securities fraud charges. “Starting sometime in early 2012, and continuing until he left the company, Shkreli used his control over Retrophin to enrich himself and to pay off claims of MSMB investors (who he had defrauded)”.
Shkreli’s case has drawn attention owing to his defiant price-gouging.
“No seizure warrant at the arrest of Martin Shkreli today, which means we didn’t seize the Wu-Tang Clan album”, the FBI’s official Twitter account in NY said. The controversial executive and his lawyer were arrested Thursday in NY on charges of security fraud committed during his time at several former companies.
On Thursday night Mr Shkreli tweeted: “Glad to be home”.
Turing Pharmaceutical Llc, a privately-held company that is operated as an integrated biopharmaceutical company.
“Thanks for your support”, Shkreli told some 800 viewers on the Youtube broadcast.
Shkreli is also chief executive of KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, which has not commented on his arrest.
