New ‘Star Wars’ Lands Biggest North American Film Debut of All Time
And it doesn’t stop there.

Walt Disney Studios’ official numbers are $238 million domestically, five days internationally for a total of $279 million, and $517 million worldwide since its debut in theaters. Worldwide, The Force Awakens is still second to Jurassic World’s $524.9 million, but the dinosaur action flick had the advantage of opening day-and-date in China.
Thanks to the massive debut of “The Force Awakens” the overall box office for all movies this weekend also broke a record, bringing in over $300 million for the first time in history.
Yesterday’s £8.6 million ($12.8 million) takings were the biggest Saturday figure of all time in the United Kingdom and Ireland, beating the two current leading three-day openers, “Skyfall” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2” at this stage in release.
In such rarified territory, Disney has been cautious about overestimating the box-office force of J.J. Abrams’ seventh chapter in George Lucas’ space saga.
“For “Star Wars” fans and Hollywood, this weekend was like the Super Bowl, the World Series and the Kentucky Derby all rolled into one perfectly realized movie event”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” had the biggest opening weekend for a movie ever.
The movie had opened in 44 overseas markets before its US debut, breaking records in numerous countries including the U.K., Ireland, and Germany.
Even the White House was getting into the “Star Wars” hoopla.
More importantly, the film sets the scene for more sequels to come, not to mention multimedia spinoffs and merchandising.
A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012. The film also received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences, scoring a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an A cinemascore from moviegoers.
