Once again, ’tis the season for tracking Santa – something that North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, has been doing for 60 years. This year the tracker showed him starting in Australasia, then traveling across Asia, then heading over Europe and Africa.

NORAD took over Santa-tracking duties when it was created in 1958. Jennifer Stadnyk of the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs, said.
The tradition began completely by accident in 1955, when Sears department store misprinted a phone number in an advertisement it placed in a Colorado Springs newspaper, urging kids to dial Santa directly.
“It actually went through to the command center at what was then known as the Continental Air Defense Command – NORAD’s predecessor”, Maj.
“Typically, you’ll have a parent that is corralling their kids around the speaker phone and the children are asking, ‘Is Santa coming?'” he said. “Dear Santa, please leave presents and take my brother”, he said, recalling one of the more memorable letters he had read. The apps can be set to eight different languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese and Chinese. To celebrate, it is expected that Michelle Obama will be helping out with the volunteer work, and will be having phone calls redirected to her on Christmas Eve so she can provide eager children with an update as to Santa’s progress this year.
NORAD is responsible for defending the skies and monitoring the sea approaches for both nations. Google also has a Santa tracker with some games and other treats, which you can find here.
“Google s Santa Tracker launches today – And it s time to follow the jolly man s sleigh”, the California-based Internet firm said in a blog post playfully penned in rhyme.
