Greek Parliament Recommends Recognition of Palestinian State
The historic resolution was adopted in the presence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the parliament Tuesday.

Last week, the Greek parliament’s foreign affairs committee unanimously approved a motion to recognise Palestine.
On Monday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced after talks with Abbas that his country would no longer refer to “the Palestinian Authority” in its official documents, but rather to Palestine. Its electoral platform in 2012 called for the “abolition of military cooperation with Israel [and] support for creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders”.
The state of Palestine now enjoys bilateral recognition from 137 nations. However, it is a significant first step.
The Greek prime minister said that a resolution was needed for the Palestinian issue as it is “key” for peaceful developments in the Middle East.
“We give new impetus to the resolution of the Palestinian issue”, he added.
Nine EU members-the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Cyprus and Sweden-have so far recognised Palestine.
Athens has forged closer ties with Israel in recent years, especially in the field of energy, while retaining its traditionally good relations with the Palestinians. He was in Israel last month where he met Abbas and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.
Greece today lined with dozens of other countries that accord recognition to Palestine.

The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), an umbrella group led by Abbas’ Fatah party, also thanked the Greek parliament “for siding with peace and justice”.
