Sushma Swaraj says PM Narendra Modi has acted like a statesman
Sharma alleged it is now in public domain that Modi used “vested private business interest” for a secret meeting with Nawaz Sharif in Kathmandu, which he alleged was organised at the behest of a businessman, claiming that he has now used the same channel for fixing this meeting in Lahore.

In an obvious reference to Pakistan, Modi said there were “some who did not want us to be here”. According to Putin and Modi, the construction of Blocks 3 and 4 is to be launched shortly, while negotiations are still held on the construction of Blocks 5 and 6.
“Spoke to PM Nawaz Sharif and wished him on his birthday”, the PM said.
“And the PM said to him, “Please come, you are our guest, please come and have tea with me”, he said. The visit coincides with Sharif’s birthday and the wedding of his granddaughter. The greatest thorn at India-Pakistan diplomacy under Modi has been that Modi doesn’t like the idea of visiting Pakistani leaders meeting Kashmiri separatists before talks.
The two leaders reiterated their commitment to resolve outstanding issues and continue the peace process at the meeting held at Sharif’s home outside the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, according to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. Modi then traveled to Pakistan to visit its prime minister in a previously unannounced visit. Not long before the tweet, PM Modi had, addressing a joint session of the Afghan Parliament, appeared to send a strong message to Pakistan, without naming the country.
“Both leaders agreed that it was extremely important that the leaders of both countries should understand each others point of view so that the doors of prosperity could open for their people”, Chaudhry said.
External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj had also been to Islamabad earlier this month for the Heart of Asia Conference.
“But yes, it’s a clear signal that active engagement can be done at a quick pace”, the aide said, declining to be identified.
“Looking forward to meeting PM Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today afternoon, where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”, Modi said on Twitter.
What does this visit mean for Indian-Pakistani relations?
The visit prime minister also met Nawaz Sharif’s mother. The attacks were later found to have been planned from Pakistan.
In Afghanistan, many believe that Islamabad sponsors the Taliban insurgency to weaken the Kabul government and limit the influence of India.
Modi on Friday made a surprise announcement of a stop-over in Lahore as he wrapped up his brief Afghanistan visit. Images of Modi inaugurating the new Afghan Parliament, built by India, could not have gone down well with the Pakistani hardliners, who see Afghanistan as Pakistan’s backyard which India shouldn’t mess around with, and also accuse India’s intelligence agencies of aiding anti-Pakistan activities in Afghanistan.

The opposition Congress Party called Modi’s visit irresponsible and said that nothing had changed to warrant warming of ties between the nuclear-armed rivals that only in August canceled scheduled high-level talks after ceasefire violations across the border. “But today, let us at least resolve to help Afghanistan – in the best traditions of good neighbourliness – through more effective transit arrangements”, she said. There are others who were uneasy at the strength of our partnership.
