India’s Modi arranged surprise Pakistan visit just hours before

The visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi started talks with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on Friday shortly after he arrived in Lahore on an unscheduled visit, officials said.

Soon after his arrival, Modi flew to Sharif’s farmhouse in the suburbs of Lahore in a helicopter. Like leaders of other nations in the world like the EU, ASEAN and even countries in our neighborhood leaders of India and Pakistan too needed to inject informality in their relations.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and training insurgents fighting for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denies.

The two countries were born out of British colonial India in 1947, divided into Hindu-majority India and Islamic Pakistan.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a key separatist leader in the Indian portion of Kashmir, said: “It’s a welcome step”.
