Google, Microsoft track Santa Claus’ movements
Staff Sgt. Kyle Kelly is one of the team who was taping down phone wires in Norad’s Santa Tracker call center on Monday.

This year’s contributors include: the 21st Space Wing, 140th Wing, Acuity Scheduling, Alaska NORAD Region, America Forces Network, Analytical Graphics, Inc., Avaya, BeMerry!
And speaking of NORAD, Microsoft has partnered up with NORAD Tracks Santa to let you find his whereabouts if you ask the Cortana digital assistant on Windows 10 for smartphones, tablets, or desktop.
His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke – but then, Terri [Van Keuren] says, the little voice started crying.
“During this season of giving, we agreed to waive the normal application fees and entry inspection/overtime costs”, said Dr. John Clifford, the USDA’s Chief Veterinary Officer.
“NORAD men, women, family and friends have selflessly volunteered their time to personally respond to phone calls and emails from children all around the world”. According to officials, the Airforce Space Command-operated Defense Support Program (DSP) satellite uses an “infrared sensor to detect heat signatures from Rudolph’s nose”, allowing them to track the sleigh. He then works his way west in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. They’re both also offering games themed for the holiday, some of which are educational. Last year, hundreds of volunteers, including many NORAD employees and Michelle Obama, fielded 135,000 calls from 234 countries.
Volunteers will also share Santa’s location on Facebook and Twitter. NORAD’s “Santa Cams” will stream videos on the website as Santa makes his way over various locations.

It started in 1955 when a Sears ad listed Santa’s number but misprinted it and actually directed children to a confidential line belonging to Col. Shoup, the command center’s head hauncho. The Air Force wouldn’t want to scramble the fighters and ready the nuclear triad for a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, so they keep track of Mr. Claus, who is too busy to file a flight plan with all those stops.
